Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to point out the distinctive features of one geographical region of Mali, the inner delta of the Niger. This area in both the distant and the recent past has seen several waves of settlers; it is the focus of several development schemes whose degree of success or failure is attributable to their awareness of traditional tenure rights (for details, see Cissé, 1979, 1981).
