Abstract

In Kenya, the Bureau of Environmental Analysis International (BEA-International) has begun carbon sequestration projects in Machakos and Kitui, Kwale and Busia on estimated 10,000 ha of land. In the Machakos and Kitui project, the local communities will be openly trading carbon credits with afforestation, reforestation, forest management, agroforestry and conservation occurring. The project occurring in Kwale and Busia will occur through private landowners and will be a private transaction brokered by BEA (Bureau of Environmental Analysis). This project will primarily involve afforestation and applicable soil management practices. Projects are expected to last between 26 and 36 years.
