- Virginia Tech 2020 Climate Action Commitment Working Group Final Technical Report(Virginia Tech, 2020-10)In late 2019—prompted by the demands of students and other community members involved in Climate Strikes and resolutions from the Faculty and Staff Senates, Student Government Association, and Graduate Student Assembly—President Tim Sands and Senior Vice President Dwayne Pinkney established a Climate Action Commitment Working Group (WG) comprised of 26 faculty, students, staff, and community members. In announcing the creation of the WG, President Sands stated that: “climate change presents one of the world’s most pressing problems…and Virginia Tech has a duty to respond.” The Group was charged to assess the university’s progress in implementing the 2009/2013 VT Climate Action Commitment, compare our experience to peer institutions, and develop a new Commitment.

- Update to the Virginia Tech Climate Action CommitmentSteger, Charles W. (Virginia Tech, 2013-05-09)The Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment, which was approved in 2009 and reaffirmed in 2013, touches on all aspects of the university, including teaching, research, and campus operations and is intended to guide the university toward a greener, more sustainable future. Among the 14 goals in the plan, it commits the university to reaching a 50 percent recycling rate by 2020, improving energy efficiency where and whenever possible in campus buildings, achieving a minimum LEED rating of silver for all new construction, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

The creation of this report also meets the requirement of the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment Resolution, Point 13: “The university will monitor energy use and GHG emissions as well as changing internal and external conditions, prepare an annual 'report card' showing progress towards targets, and periodically reevaluate targets, making adjustments to targets as appropriate based on changing internal and external conditions and evolving technologies.”
