A case study of a herder/farmer conflict in Mali on the border with Mauritania with ethnic overtones. The conflict over the calendar of land use by the different production systems is described. The dispute undermines the seasonal relations between the two communities which do not have any shared institutional authority for the prevention and resolution of their disagreements. The author argues for well-defined and separate use zones for the different production systems.en
