Dear Dr. Petty and Dr. Cacioppo:

I am completing a doctoral dissertation at Virginia Tech entitled
"Instructional Strategies to Improve Women's Attitudes toward Science." I
would like your permission to reprint in my dissertation my version of a
diagram in:

    Petty, R. E., & Cacioppo, J. T. (1986). The elaboration likelihood model
of persuasion. Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, 19, 123-205.

The diagram to be reproduced is Figure 1 on page 126. The caption reads
"Central and peripheral routes to persuasion.  This figure depicts the two
anchoring endpoints on the elaboration likelihood continuum."

The requested permission extends to any future revisions and editions of my
dissertation, including non-exclusive world rights in all languages, and to
the prospective publication of my dissertation by UMI Company. These rights
will in no way restrict republication of the material in any other form by
you or by others authorized by you. Your approval will also confirm that you
own the copyright to the above-described material.

If these arrangements meet with your approval, please indicate your approval
in an email message. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you
very much.

Sincerely,

Phyllis Leary Newbill
