Mike,
     The copyrights for the figures belong to the IEEE and the Taylor & Francis Group.  You could try to get their permission to reproduce the figures from the journal/book. The figure 3.1 of Chapter 3 was drawn by Webb Research and if you want an equivalent you might ask them for one that is not copyrighted. I attach 2 figures that are very similar to the figures in the IEEE paper but are original and uncopyrighted  and so could be referenced as similar to the ones in the paper.

Dear Mr. Davis,

I am writing to you concerning the usage of 2 images from 'The autonomous underwater glider "Spray"' as published in Journal of Oceanic Engineering in 2001 and one image from ‘Chapter 3 Autonomous buoyancy-driven underwater glider’ as published in Technology and Applications of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, volume 2.  I wish to use these images in my Masters Thesis, entitled ‘A Self-Sustaining, Boundary-Layer-Adapted System for Terrain Exploration and Environmental Sampling’.  

The images in question from 'The autonomous underwater glider "Spray"' are Figure 2 (page 439), and Figure 3 (page 440). The image in question from ‘Chapter 3 Autonomous buoyancy-driven underwater glider’ is Figure 3.1.

If you are not the copyright owner of these images, or I need to contact someone else, I would be greatly appreciative if you could direct me to whom I should address my request.  If you would like to see the context in which these images are used, I can provide a copy you with a digital copy of my thesis.
