Statement by Charles W. Steger on the Report to the President, On Issues Raised By The Virginia Tech Tragedy

BLACKSBURG, Va., June 13, 2007 – We thank President Bush and his cabinet officials for the thoughtful response to the April 16 tragedy on the Virginia Tech campus. I have not yet had an opportunity to fully digest the report. However, the executive summary of findings and recommendations appears to be quite helpful.

The discussion in the report reflects the dialog on this campus and within our presentations to the governor's review panel. Based on my quick review, the report unearthed the deep complexities of the issues facing college campuses today. We believe that this will further inform the national and our state discussion on the nexus between societal safety and personal freedoms.
