BLACKSBURG, Va., July 19, 2006 – Melissa Maybury Lubin of Richmond, Va., has been named director of the Virginia Tech Richmond Center. In this position, she will be responsible for the university’s graduate and lifelong learning programs that are tailored to serve the people of the greater Richmond community.
“We are pleased to have Melissa leading our program efforts in the Richmond area,” Virginia Tech’s Vice Provost for Outreach and International Affairs John E. Dooley said in announcing the appointment. “She brings to Virginia Tech a rich background in marketing and program development, as well as a good understanding of the educational needs and opportunities of the Richmond market. We look forward to expanding Virginia Tech's program presence in the region under her leadership.”
Lubin comes to Virginia Tech from the Institute for Professional Development, where she was associate dean of admissions and contract director of marketing and enrollment for Averett University. In this position, she managed Averett University’s statewide Graduate and Professional Studies Program, with four learning centers and 21 classroom sites throughout Virginia. Her previous experience in the field of education includes teaching upper level undergraduate marketing courses at Radford University.
Her considerable experience in corporate marketing, sales, and training includes four years with Circuit City Stores, Inc. in progressively responsible positions and another four years with This End Up Furniture Company in Richmond, where she developed and delivered training for district and store managers and served as a district sales manager.
“I am thrilled to be joining Virginia Tech,” Lubin said. “I grew up in Blacksburg and have lived in Richmond for almost 15 years, so I understand the strong educational heritage that Virginia Tech brings to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our vision in Outreach and International Affairs is to find ways to contribute to the economic and social well being of our communities through learning, discovery, and engagement with society. My vision for the Center is to link the needs of the greater Richmond region to the rich resources offered by Virginia Tech. I look forward to parlaying my experience in the private sector and corporations to the public sector by focusing on the needs of state and local governments.”
Lubin earned her master’s in business from Georgia Southern University and her bachelor’s from Armstrong State College. She spent her first three years as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech.
