BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 7, 2009 – Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumnus Navy Lt. Cmdr. Todd Mills, who received a degree in political science from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences in 1996, has been selected as the Hokie Hero for the Virginia Tech versus Alabama football game.

The corps Hokie Hero program, started in 2006 by ISP Sports and sponsored by the University Bookstore, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Bill Roth and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the corps website, on the corps alumni website and in the Corps Review magazine.

Mills is currently stationed in Iraq as a member of a Naval Special Warfare Team. Todd is from Petersburg, Va., and this is his first combat deployment. Mills is a Class of 1996 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, was a member of the Cadet Color Guard as an underclassman, and served on regimental staff during his senior year. He is also a legacy cadet as his father, Dan Mills, was the commander of Hotel Company in the Class of 1964, and his younger brother Nathan was the executive officer for second battalion in the Class of 1999 and also earned a varsity letter as a Virginia Tech student athletic trainer.

Mills is an officer in the Naval Reserves, and when his tour in southwest Asia is complete, he will return to employment as a senior operations analyst with Nangwik Services, a subsidiary of the Chenega Corporation headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska.
