BLACKSBURG, Va., June 25, 2010 – Robert Wheeler, professor of mathematics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
Joining the Virginia Tech community in 1979, Wheeler has published 36 papers in a research program on integral equations that was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for many years. He also served as a reviewer for the NSF, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and for the Israel Science Foundation.
Wheeler delivered 39 invited conference lectures and colloquia in five countries. He participated in several curriculum reform efforts, including calculus reform, a NSF-funded effort to strengthen ties between engineering and mathematics curricula, and the development of computer-aided instruction.
For 31 years, Wheeler taught mathematics courses at all levels. He served on multiple committees and commissions, including University Council, the commission on Undergraduate Studies and Policies, the University Promotion and Tenure committee, the College Curriculum Committee, the College Personnel Committee, and on over 40 distinct departmental committees, many times as chairman and many for more than one term. He also supervised one doctoral dissertation.
Wheeler received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and his master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.
