Dr. John H. Burton
ROANOKE, Va., July 30, 2010 – Dr. John H. Burton has been named chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
“John brings a wealth of experience to [Virginia Tech Carilion]. His expertise in the practice of emergency medicine and experience in medical education will benefit our students greatly,” stated Dr. Cynda Ann Johnson, founding dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Burton most recently served as interim chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Albany Medical Center. Prior to that, he was the vice chairman for academic affairs from 2008 to 2010 and served as the residency program director from 2006 to 2008. In 2009, Burton was inducted into the Theta Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society at Albany Medical College.
“I look forward to being part of a school that puts patient-centered care and the development of physician thought leaders at the forefront,” said Burton.
In addition to his recent positions and honors, Burton has authored a textbook and a dozen book chapters as well as numerous peer reviewed publications and abstracts. In addition, he has delivered over 200 presentations, including keynote addresses and invited lectures.
Burton earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute joins the basic science, life science, bioinformatics, and engineering strengths of Virginia Tech with the medical practice and medical education experience of Carilion Clinic. Virginia Tech Carilion is located in a new biomedical health sciences campus in Roanoke at 2 Riverside Circle.
