Bennet Cassell
Sept. 29, 2010 – Bennet Cassell, professor of dairy science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the “professor emeritus” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1982, Cassell served the university and the Virginia dairy industry as a Virginia Cooperative Extension specialist in genetics.
He was a prolific writer of popular press and extension publications and authored or co-authored more than 60 research papers in the Journal of Dairy Science.
Cassell was recognized by the scientific community for excellence in research with awards such as the American Dairy Science Association’s J. L. Lush Award for outstanding contributions in dairy genetics and the National Association of Animal Breeders’ Award for Research.
He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University.
