Active Commute Celebration promotes sustainable transportation

BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 15, 2008 – Transportation and Campus Services, formerly the Office of Transportation, will be helping to advance Virginia Tech's sustainability initiatives and help Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students find more affordable commuting methods at the Active Commute Celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

With environmental issues at the forefront and people cringing at the numbers at the pumps, alternative transportation is beginning to play a more important role in people’s lives.

The Active Commute Celebration, which will take place on the Drillfield from 8 a.m. to 1p.m., “is designed to celebrate those who already do bike, walk, take transit, vanpool, and carpool to campus, as well as to provide those who are interested in exploring alternative modes of transportation with helpful information,” says Debby Freed, Alternative Transportation manager at Virginia Tech.

The program will include breakfast, coupons, information about Virginia Tech’s Commuter Alternative Programs, health information, bicycle registration and checks, and the kick-off of VT Moves.

Participants in the event include: Blacksburg Transit, Smart Way Bus, Off Campus Housing, CommonHealth, Virginia Tech Recreational Sports, Virginia Tech Police Department, East Coasters, GoLoco, RIDE Solutions, and Bike Advocacy at Virginia Tech.
