Charles W. Steger
BLACKSBURG, Va., Feb. 18, 2009 – Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger was recently honored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III with its Chief Executive Leadership Award at its annual conference held in Atlanta Feb. 8-11.
The award recognizes an outstanding president, chancellor, head master, or system head of a District III CASE member institution who has created vision and been inspirational to others, led the institution to higher levels of success and increased its stature, encouraged innovation, and risk-taking among employees, and is supportive of all aspects of institutional advancement.
In presenting the award Tuesday, CASE III board member Matt Winston, assistant to the president of the University of Georgia, noted Steger’s “Clark Kent” qualities of quiet leadership and determination. Winston also noted that while Steger is widely recognized for his leadership in response to the April 16, 2007 tragedy, he has also led the university forward in pursuit of goals such as launching a $1 billion comprehensive campaign, establishing a new medical school, and enrolling record numbers of first-year students the past two years.
In accepting the award, Steger noted that Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and alumni should also be recognized for their contributions to the university.

In addition, Virginia Tech was recognized with two other awards at the conference.
Three University Relations staff members, Nathan Skreslet, graphic designer; Lynn Davis, communications manager in the College of Natural Resources; and Richard Lovegrove, university editor, along with Society of Environmental Journalists members Jay Letto and Chris Rigel, were finalists for the Grand Award for their work on publications for the Society of Environmental Journalists meeting held at Virginia Tech in October 2008.
University Relations Broadcast Media Coordinator Paul Lancaster received a Special Merit Award for his work on public service announcements that air on Radio IQ, WVTF's AM news operation.
