BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 1, 2010 – The Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts and Cinema announces its 2010-11 season. This year’s lineup offers multiple opportunities to enjoy live theatre and music, as well as cinema events, in Blacksburg.
Two new “An Evening with …” cinema events have been added to this year's season as award-winning filmmakers David Williams and Melissa Thompson share their passion and work. David Williams will speak at The Lyric Theatre in Blacksburg on Aug. 26, 2010. Melissa Thompson will discuss her work on March 24, 2011 at The Lyric Theatre. Both events have free admission.
The University Chamber Music Series begins Aug. 30, 2010, and continues through April 2011, for a total of seven concerts. Included in the series are Third Coast Percussion; Kandinsky Trio featuring Elizabeth Futral, soprano; Kronos Quartet; The Emerson String Quartet; Kandinsky Beat Down featuring Josh Roseman; Colorado Quartet; and Faculty Chamber Music.
The Mainstage Theatre season opens on Nov. 5, 2010 with the world premiere of “Persephone” by playwright Warren Leight. Faculty member Bob McGrath directs this new multimedia production, which includes original music by Ben Neill and lyrics by Mimi Goese. Other shows in the season include Bertolt Brecht’s “The Good Person of Szechuan,” Sarah Ruhl’s “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” and the musical “The Fantasticks” with music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones.
The New River Valley Symphony, under the direction of James Glazebrook, returns for three programs. The first concert, scheduled for Nov. 12, features “Hary Janos Suite” by Zoltan Kodaly and “New World Symphony” by Antonin Dvorak. A winter concert in February with works by Respighi, Haydn and Mozart and a spring concert in April featuring works by Beethoven, Kabalevsky, John Williams, and Howard Hanson will round out the season.

Virginia Tech's School of Performing Arts, a unit within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, is comprised of the Department of Music, the Department of Theatre and Cinema, and programs and classes in dance.
