Elizabeth Futral, soprano, will perform with the Kandinsky Trio on Sept. 19
BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 17, 2010 – The Kandinsky Trio will be joined by Elizabeth Futral, soprano, for a concert on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Squires Recital Salon on the campus of Virginia Tech.
The concert is a part of the University Chamber Music Series at Virginia Tech sponsored by the Department of Music.
Futral and the Kandinsky Trio will perform Shostakovich’s Seven Romances on Poems by Alexander Blok, Opus 127. A Handel aria and Beethoven’s beloved “Ghost Trio,” Opus 70, No. 1 will also be featured.
Futral has established herself as one of the major coloratura sopranos in the world today. She has appeared with the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera House, and Covent Garden.
The Kandinsky Trio, now in its 22nd season, is celebrating one of the longest and most successful artist residencies in the United States. The Trio has performed over a thousand concerts of high caliber chamber music in the U.S., Europe and Canada and is one of only six piano trios ever to win the coveted Chamber Music America Residency Award.
Alan Weinstein, cello, is a faculty member at Virginia Tech, where he teaches cello and bass. He has performed throughout North America and Europe and appeared on television and radio broadcasts throughout the United States and Canada. His jazz collaborations have even included performances as a harmonica player with Ray Charles. His dedication to new music has led him to premiere compositions from many various artists.
Elizabeth Bachelder, pianist, made her debut as a child prodigy in a solo piano recital at Carnegie Recital Hall at age 9 and her first appearance with orchestra at age 12. In addition to performing and and touring with the Trio, she teaches piano at Roanoke College, coaches college music ensembles and gives private lessons.
Violinist Benefict Goodfriend has performed worldwide as soloist and chamber musician, receiving critical acclaim. His New York debut prompted the New York Times to write, "The performance was vibrantly alive to every nuance in the score, elegantly phrased, spontaneous, and boldly characterful." He has been a member of the Kandinsky Trio since 1987.
The Trio believes that chamber music should be an accessible experience for everyone and performs the great cannon of art music with a strong commitment to new works. Their encores have often been takes on rock, folk and jazz music.
