Charles Parry honored with emeritus status

BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 19, 2010 – Charles Parry, professor of mathematics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the “professor emeritus” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1971, Parry established a research program in number theory and published 37 papers. He delivered invited lectures in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and the United States. He served his profession as a proposal reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the Canadian Research Council.

Parry taught courses at all levels of the curriculum, won awards for his teaching excellence, and supervised eight doctoral dissertations. He participated in the design of mathematics courses for computer science majors.

Parry received his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York College at Oswego and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Michigan State University.
