Maggie Sloane named associate director for compliance and conflict resolution

BLACKSBURG, Va., March 24, 2006 – Maggie Sloane, of Blacksburg, Va., has been named associate director for compliance and conflict resolution in the Virginia Tech Office for Equal Opportunity.

As Associate Director for Compliance and Conflict Resolution, Sloane’s responsibilities will include providing education and consultation on Virginia Tech’s antidiscriminatory harassment policy and investigating complaints of possible policy violations; offering mediation, facilitation, and other conflict resolution services where those approaches are the most appropriate; and providing discriminatory harassment prevention training and conflict resolution/management training.

“Virginia Tech is very fortunate to have someone with Maggie’s wealth of experience, desire and passion to positively resolve, impact, and raise competency levels in the areas of discriminatory harassment prevention and conflict resolution,” said Kevin McDonald, director of the Office for Equal Opportuntiy. “Her amazing interpersonal communication skills and sensitivity to the aforementioned areas will make her a valuable resource to our entire Virginia Tech community.”

Sloane received her bachelor’s degree from Pomona College and her Juris Doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law. She served at Duke University, both as an investigator and as director, harassment prevention and gender equity. A certified mediator, Sloane has had a private practice conducting family and workplace mediations.

“I am excited about having the opportunity to work in both compliance and conflict resolution at Virginia Tech,” said Sloane. “My commitment is to helping cultivate fair and respectful work and learning environments. I believe in addressing problems at the lowest appropriate level, striving for resolutions that as much as possible preserve the dignity of and respect for all of the individuals involved.”
