- Correlation-Based Detection and Classification of Rail Wheel Defects using Air-coupled Ultrasonic Acoustic EmissionsNouri, Arash (Virginia Tech, 2016-04-29)Defected wheel are one the major reasons endangered state of railroad vehicles safety statue, due to vehicle derailment and worsen the quality of freight and passenger transportation. Therefore, timely defect detection for monitoring and detecting the state of defects is highly critical. This thesis presents a passive non-contact acoustic structural health monitoring approach using ultrasonic acoustic emissions (UAE) to detect certain defects on different structures, as well as, classifying the type of the defect on them. The acoustic emission signals used in this study are in the ultrasonic range (18-120 kHz), which is significantly higher than the majority of the research in this area thus far. For the proposed method, an impulse excitation, such as a hammer strike, is applied to the structure. In addition, ultrasound techniques have higher sensitivity to both surface and subsurface defects, which make the defect detection more accurate. Three structures considered for this study are: 1) a longitudinal beam, 2) a lifting weight, 3) an actual rail-wheel. A longitudinal beam was used at the first step for a better understanding of physics of the ultrasound propagation from the defect, as well, develop a method for extracting the signature response of the defect. Besides, the inherent directionality of the ultrasound microphone increases the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and could be useful in the noisy areas. Next, by considering the ultimate goal of the project, lifting weight was chosen, due to its similarity to the ultimate goal of this project that is a rail-wheel. A detection method and metric were developed by using the lifting weight and two type of synthetic defects were classified on this structure. Also, by using same extracted features, the same types of defects were detected and classified on an actual rail-wheel.
- Enhancing Autonomous Vehicle Navigation with a Clothoid-Based Lateral ControllerShaju, Aashish; Southward, Steve; Ahmadian, Mehdi (MDPI, 2024-02-22)This study introduces an advanced lateral control strategy for autonomous vehicles using a clothoid-based approach integrated with an adaptive lookahead mechanism. The primary focus is on enhancing lateral stability and path-tracking accuracy through the application of Euler spirals for smooth curvature transitions, thereby reducing passenger discomfort and the risk of vehicle rollover. An innovative aspect of our work is the adaptive adjustment of lookahead distance based on real-time vehicle dynamics and road geometry, which ensures optimal path following under varying conditions. A quasi-feedback control algorithm constructs optimal clothoids at each time step, generating the appropriate steering input. A lead filter compensates for the vehicle’s lateral dynamics lag, improving control responsiveness and stability. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is validated through a comprehensive co-simulation using TruckSim® and Simulink®, demonstrating significant improvements in lateral control performance across diverse driving scenarios. Future directions include scaling the controller for higher-speed applications and further optimization to minimize off-track errors, particularly for articulated vehicles.
- The Hydrodynamics and Energetics of Bioinspired Swimming with Undulatory Electromechanical FinsGater, Brittany L. (Virginia Tech, 2017)Biological systems offer novel and efficient solutions to many engineering applications, including marine propulsion. It is of interest to determine how fish interact with the water around them, and how best to utilize the potential their methods offer. A stingray-like fin was chosen for analysis due to the maneuverability and versatility of stingrays. The stingray fin was modeled in 2D as a sinusoidal wave with an amplitude increasing from zero at the leading edge to a maximum at the trailing edge. Using this model, a parametric study was performed to examine the effects of the fin on surrounding water in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results were analyzed both qualitatively, in terms of the pressure contours on the fin and vorticity in the trailing wake, and quantitatively, in terms of the resultant forces and the mechanical power requirements to actuate the desired fin motion. The average thrust was shown to depend primarily on the relationship between the swimming speed and the frequency and wavelength (which both are directly proportional to the wavespeed of the fin), although amplitude can be used to augment thrust production as well. However, acceleration was shown to significantly correlate with a large variation in lift and moment, as well as with greater power losses. Using results from the parametric study, the potential for power regeneration was also examined. Relationships between frequency, velocity, drag, and power input were determined using nonlinear regression that explained more than 99.8% of the data. The actuator for a fin was modeled as a single DC motor-shaft system, allowing the combination of the energetic effects of the motor with the fin-fluid system. When combined, even a non-ideal fin model was able to regenerate more power at a given flow speed than was required to swim at the same speed. Even in a more realistic setting, this high proportion of regenerative power suggests that regeneration and energy harvesting could be both feasible and useful in a mission setting.
- Mobile Hybrid Power System Theory of OperationPierce, Timothy M. Jr. (Virginia Tech, 2016-07-22)Efficiency is a driving constraint for electrical power systems as global energy demands are ever increasing. Followed by the introduction of diesel generators, electricity has become available in more locations than ever. However, operating a diesel generator on its own is not the most energy efficient. This is because the high crest factor loads, of many applications, decrease the fuel efficiency of a hydrocarbon generator. To understand this, we need to understand how an electrical load affects a generator. Starting with a load profile, a system designer must choose a generator to meet peak demand, marking the first instance where a load profile has influence over a generator. This decision will insure that brownouts do not occur, but, this will lead to poor energy efficiency. We say this because a generator is most energy efficient under heavier loads, meaning, during lighter loads, more fuel will be consumed to produce the same amount of energy. While this may be fine if the peak load was close to the average load, however, the actual crest factor for a typical residential load profile is much higher. This gap between peak and average load means that a generator will spend most of its time operating at its most inefficient point. To compensate for this, and reduce fuel consumption, the Mechatronics Lab at Virginia Tech has developed a mobile hybrid power system (MHPS) to address this problem. The solution was to augment a diesel generator with a battery pack. This allowed us to constrain the generator so that it only operates with fixed efficiency. It is the theory behind this system that will be covered in this thesis.
- PID-Based Longitudinal Control of Platooning TrucksShaju, Aashish; Southward, Steve; Ahmadian, Mehdi (MDPI, 2023-12-05)This article focuses on the development and assessment of a PID-based computationally cost-efficient longitudinal control algorithm for platooning trucks. The study employs a linear controller with a nested architecture, wherein the inner loop regulates relative velocities while the outer loop governs inter-vehicle distances within platoon vehicles. The design of the proposed PID controller entails a comprehensive focus on system identification, particularly emphasizing actuation dynamics. The simulation framework used in this study has been established through the integration of TruckSim® and Simulink®, resulting in a co-simulation environment. Simulink® serves as the platform for control action implementation, while TruckSim® simulates the vehicle’s dynamic behavior, thereby closely replicating real world conditions. The significant effort in fine-tuning the PID controller is described in detail, including the system identification of the linearized longitudinal dynamic model of the truck. The implementation is followed by an extensive series of simulation tests, systematically evaluating the controller’s performance, stability, and robustness. The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller in various leading truck operational scenarios. Furthermore, the controller’s robustness to large fluctuations in road grade and payload weight, which is commonly experienced in commercial vehicles, is evaluated. The simulation results indicate the controller’s ability to compensate for changes in both road grade and payload. Additionally, an initial assessment of the controller’s efficiency is conducted by comparing the commanded control efforts (total torque on wheels) along with the total fuel consumed. This initial analysis suggests that the controller exhibits minimal aggressive tendencies.
- A Review on Eigenstructure Assignment Methods and Orthogonal Eigenstructure Control of Structural VibrationsRastgaar, Mohammad; Ahmadian, Mehdi; Southward, Steve (Hindawi, 2009-01-01)This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of eigenstructure assignment methods for vibration cancellation. Eigenstructure assignment techniques have been widely used during the past three decades for vibration suppression in structures, especially in large space structures. These methods work similar to mode localization in which global vibrations are managed such that they remain localized within the structure. Such localization would help reducing vibrations more effectively than other methods of vibration cancellation, by virtue of confining the vibrations close to the source of disturbance. The common objective of different methods of eigenstructure assignment is to provide controller design freedom beyond pole placement, and define appropriate shapes for the eigenvectors of the systems. These methods; however, offer a large and complex design space of options that can often overwhelm the control designer. Recent developments in orthogonal eigenstructure control offers a significant simplification of the design task while allowing some experience-based design freedom. The majority of the papers from the past three decades in structural vibration cancellation using eigenstructure assignment methods are reviewed, along with recent studies that introduce new developments in eigenstructure assignment techniques.
