- 3D printing vending machine(United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2016-08-16)A vending machine for creating a three-dimensional object having an enclosure having an exterior and interior. The interior receives and houses at least one three-dimensional printer. An interface for accepting an instruction associated with an object to be printed and transmitting the instruction to the printer. A storage section for storing a printed object that provides access to the printed part but limits or prohibits access to the interior.
- Active control of aircraft engine inlet noise using compact sound sources and distributed error sensors(United States Patent and Trademark Office, 1996-05-07)An active noise control system using a compact sound source is effective to reduce aircraft engine duct noise. The fan noise from a turbofan engine is controlled using an adaptive filtered-x LMS algorithm. Single multi channel control systems are used to control the fan blade passage frequency (BPF) tone and the BPF tone and the first harmonic of the BPF tone for a plane wave excitation. A multi channel control system is used to control any spinning mode. The multi channel control system to control both fan tones and a high pressure compressor BPF tone simultaneously. In order to make active control of turbofan inlet noise a viable technology, a compact sound source is employed to generate the control field. This control field sound source consists of an array of identical thin, cylindrically curved panels with an inner radius of curvature corresponding to that of the engine inlet. These panels are flush mounted inside the inlet duct and sealed on all edges to prevent leakage around the panel and to minimize the aerodynamic losses created by the addition of the panels. Each panel is driven by one or more piezoelectric force transducers mounted on the surface of the panel. The response of the panel to excitation is maximized when it is driven at its resonance; therefore, the panel is designed such that its fundamental frequency is near the tone to be canceled, typically 2000-4000 Hz.
- Cage positioned tilting pad bearing(United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2016-07-19)A tilting pad bearing for a high speed rotary machines, such as a turbocharger for an internal combustion engine, comprises a cage and a plurality of tilting pads. The cage is formed by two annular rings separated by spacers machined from a single billet of high-temperature metal. The bearing pads are inserted between the spacers of the cage. One or more O-rings retain the bearing pads within the cage during assembly of the bearing but are not required after installation of the bearing. When retained in the final assembly and installation of the bearing, the O-rings allow tilting movement of the pads within the cage. The outer surfaces of the spacers have a plurality of grooves, and outer surfaces of each of the pads have matching grooves. One of the grooves is an oil groove, wherein the oil groove of the spacers communicating with and oil inlet holes in the spacers. At least one of the other grooves receives an O-ring that hold the pads in place in the cage during installation. When two O-rings are used on either side of the oil groove in the final assembly, the O-rings serve to direct oil to the oil groove and prevent or reduce oil leakage.
- Imparting motion to a test object such as a motor vehicle in a controlled fashion with improved accuracy(United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2017-05-09)An apparatus imparts motion to a test object such as a motor vehicle in a controlled fashion. A base has mounted on it a linear electromagnetic motor having a first end and a second end, the first end being connected to the base. A pneumatic cylinder and piston combination have a first end and a second end, the first end connected to the base so that the pneumatic cylinder and piston combination is generally parallel with the linear electromagnetic motor. The second ends of the linear electromagnetic motor and pneumatic cylinder and piston combination being commonly linked to a mount for the test object. A control system for the linear electromagnetic motor and pneumatic cylinder and piston combination drives the pneumatic cylinder and piston combination to support a substantial static load of the test object and the linear electromagnetic motor to impart controlled motion to the test object.
- Planar Bridging-Droplet Thermal DiodeBoreyko, Jonathan B.; Edalatpour, Mojtaba; Murphy, Kevin; Mukherjee, Ranit (Innovators Legal, 2021-12-30)This disclosure provides a thermal diode including a first plate having a first surface defining a wick structure. The thermal diode can include a second plate having a smooth surface facing the wick structure, the smooth surface and the wick structure defining a chamber for accommodating a phase-change liquid. The thermal diode also can include a separator positioned between the first plate and the second plate to separate the wick structure from the smooth surface by a gap that is less than a capillary length of the phase-change liquid.
- Processing method for grain-oriented lead-free piezoelectric Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3—BaTiO3 ceramics exhibiting giant performance(United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2017-09-26)Textured ceramic compositions having improved piezoelectric characteristics as compared with their random counterparts are provided. Methods of making the compositions and devices using them are also included. More particularly, compositions comprising textured ceramic Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3—BaTiO3(NBT-BT) materials synthesized from high aspect ratio NBT seeds exhibit improved characteristics, including an increased longitudinal piezoelectric constant (d33) and magnetoelectric coupling coefficient over randomly oriented NBT-BT. Additionally provided are compositions comprising of nanostructured Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3—BaTiO3 ferroelectric whiskers having a high aspect ratio. Nanostructured whiskers can be used to improve the piezoelectric properties of the bulk ceramics. The inventive materials are useful in microelectronic devices, with some finding particular application as multilayer actuators and transducers.
- Thermal expansion driven indentation stress-strain systemLesko, John J.; Armstrong, Ronald (1992-07-28)Disclosed is a method and apparatus of indentation testing of variable types of specimens which includes mounting an indenter member onto a thermally expandable member, mounting the specimen to be tested on a pedestal, loading the specimen with the indenter member by thermally expanding the thermally expandable member and measuring applied force to and displacement of the specimen so as to determine the hardness or other material properties of the specimen. The indenter member is thermally insulated from the thermally expandable member prior to thermally expanding the thermally expandable member. The thermal expansion driven indentation system in the present invention allows for controlled application of precise and continuous reproducible loads to produce stress-strain plots. Continuous indentation testing with this system has yielded results which correlate well to Rockwell fixed load hardness tests on standard test blocks. Further, efforts in drawing relationships with tensile results have shown support for the use of continuous indentation testing for the generation of local material properties.
