This is the first of a series of working papers that will be published as part of a regional action-research programme on the shared management of common property resources in the Sahel (SMCPR). By documenting ongoing field-based experiences, we aim to promote learning and exchange among those who are interested in the practices and policies affecting resource management in dryland Africa.
