The Annapuma Region of Nepal contains spectacular views and is home to many endangered wildlife species making the area a major trekking destination. It was recognized that the tourism was creating hardship for local residents and creating significant environmental damage. Therefore, an access fee was developed to support conservations and development projects. With a permit fee of US$25, the revenue generated was able to provide 70% of the costs of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. The Conservation Area Management Committees (CAMC) have used these funds for development activities including tourism management, agricultural development, and health education and cultural heritage projects. Considerable focus has been on reforestation though conservation education and extension programs.
