This paper uses data from research in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Ethiopia, and South Africa to support the collective model as a means of examining intrahousehold allocation and bargaining power. The findings suggest that individuals in households do not share identical preferences or control assets together. This has specific implications in terms of gender, as the research indicates that women control assets and allocate expenses in a manner which will positively affect the next generation.
