Abstract

Two of the most transformational aspects of open educational resources are the affordances to tweak, customize, and adapt existing content to fit a specific context -- and to freely share adapted versions publicly so that others may benefit. But are faculty doing these things? And if not, why not?

This practitioner/scholar presentation summarizes a qualitative, exploratory study of reviewers and adopters of the open textbook, Fundamentals of Business, a deeply-adapted introductory level business text created at the presenter’s institution which has been downloaded worldwide over 500,000 times in less than three years. The study aims to identify types of faculty/instructor usage, discovery patterns, and levels of awareness regarding affordances of open educational resources. The presenter will also offer practical suggestions for OER creators regarding raising awareness of the affordances of open educational resources.
