| dc.description.abstract | This case study examines the psychological, ethical, and social consequences of generative AI chatbots that mimic fictional or public figures. Focusing on the tragic suicide of a 14-year-old who formed a parasocial attachment to a chatbot modeled after Daenerys Targaryen, the study explores how large language models (LLMs) can produce dangerously convincing simulations of human interaction. The case raises critical concerns about the boundaries between virtual and real relationships, especially for vulnerable users. Drawing comparisons to historic incidents of obsessive parasocial relationships, the study argues that AI is not inherently malicious, but often functions as a coping mechanism in a society marked by loneliness, digital addiction, and declining social trust. As more individuals turn to AI for companionship, expertise, or emotional support, the risks of detachment from reality grow—particularly among youth. The study calls for a reevaluation of ethical boundaries in AI development, especially regarding emotional simulation, and questions the adequacy of current social infrastructure in meeting emotional and relational needs. | en |
