In the words of David Hughes, "Afrocentric Architecture is a distinctive manifestation in a modern building environment which derives from the cultural, environmental and historical origins of the continent of Africa." In recent years, there has been a resurgence that seeks to define what it truly means for architecture to be afrocentric. The work engages so-called Five Pillars of Afro-centric Architecture defined by The Community Planning and Design Initiative Africa (CPDI Africa), namely Culture and Tradition, Aesthetics and Form, Spiritual Nature, Local Materials, and Community Engagement, to search for an afracentrism in the context of a dwelling in southern Nigeria's Edo-culture.en
Although the Afrocentric architectural movement is still in its early stages, the research presented here is intended to encourage future studies As one of Nigeria's minority ethnic groups, the Edo people possess a distinctive cultural identity. The embedding of indigenous elements into a new architecture attempts to honor the Edo identity and contribute to the broader effort of cultural preservation.en
