This paper focuses on desirable changes to forest management to achieve sustainability. The author comments on current forest industry structure and recommends adoption of the Chief Forester's vision of the industry as "... the best managers of naturally forested landscapes in the world." A set of goals to achieve this vision is outlined and a forest management framework is proposed that includes strategic direction, management instruments, and a system to implement the strategy. A draft "Sustainable Forest Management Contract" is presented for discussion.
