This is a pilot study for the development of a method of analysing activity patterns of users with respect to the designed physical environment. Empirical data in the form of daily-diaries and preferences of college students is used in identifying the functional properties of a university setting. Based on the interaction requirements of the participants of the activities accommodated, individual built forms are classified into two categories: (1) single-modal, and (2) multi-modal. In congruence with this, the results of the diaries of users indicated dysfunctions in the utilization of physical and human resources. The pragmatic use of the conventional built form concept is identified as the cause of the dysfunctions observed.en
