(American Physical Society, 2008-02-01)The atmospheric neutrino background for proton decay via p → e+π0 in ring imaging water Cherenkov detectors is studied with an artificial accelerator neutrino beam for the first time. In total, 3.14×105 neutrino events corresponding to about 10 megaton-years of atmospheric neutrino interactions were collected by a 1,000 ton water Cherenkov detector (KT). The KT charged-current single p0 production data are well reproduced by simulation programs of neutrino and secondary hadronic interactions used in the Super–Kamiokande (SK) proton decay search. The obtained p → e+π0 background rate by the KT data for SK from the atmospheric neutrinos whose energies are below 3 GeV is 1.63 +0.42−0.33 (stat.) +0.45−0.51 (syst.) (megaton-year)−1. This result is also relevant to possible future, megaton-scale water Cherenkov detectors.

(American Physical Society, 2010-06-16)The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of neutral current coherent π⁰ production on carbon by a muon neutrino beam with average energy 0.8 GeV. The separation of coherent from inclusive π⁰ production has been improved by detecting recoil protons from resonant π⁰ production. We measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent π⁰ production to total charged current cross sections to be (1.16 ± 0.24) x 10⁻². The ratio of charged current coherent π⁺ to neutral current coherent π⁰ production is calculated to be 0.14+0.30−0.28, using our published charged current coherent pion measurement.

(American Physical Society, 2010-02-01)The SciBooNE Collaboration reports inclusive neutral current neutral pion production by a muon neutrino beam on a polystyrene target (C8H8). We obtain (7.7 ± 0.5(stat.) ± 0.5(sys.)) x 10⁻²as the ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section; the mean energy of neutrinos producing detected neutral pions is 1.1 GeV. The result agrees with the Rein-Sehgal model implemented in our neutrino interaction simulation program with nuclear effects. The spectrum shape of the π⁰ momentum and angle agree with the model. We also measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent pion production to total charged current cross section to be (0.7 ± 0.4) x 10⁻².

(American Physical Society, 2008-08-01)Single charged pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions with carbon is studied using data collected in the K2K long-baseline neutrino experiment. The mean energy of the incident muon neutrinos is 1.3 GeV. The data used in this analysis are mainly from a fully active scintillator detector, SciBar. The cross section for single π+ production in the resonance region (W < 2 GeV/c2) relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section is found to be 0.734 +0.140 −0.153. The energy-dependent cross section ratio is also measured. The results are consistent with a previous experiment and the prediction of our model.

(American Physical Society, 2008-12-01)The SciBooNE Collaboration has performed a search for charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, νυ 12C &8594; μ 12Cπ ⁺, with two distinct data samples. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross section ratio of charged current coherent pion production to the total charged current cross section at 0.67 x 102 at mean neutrino energy 1.1 GeV and 1.36 x 102 at mean neutrino energy 2.2 GeV.
