- Female Voice Agents in Fully Autonomous Vehicles Are Not Only More Likeable and Comfortable, But Also More CompetentDong, J.; Lawson, E.; Olsen, J.; Jeon, Myounghoon (SAGE Publications, 2020-01-01)Driving agents can provide an effective solution to improve drivers’ trust in and to manage interactions with autonomous vehicles. Research has focused on voice-agents, while few have explored robot-agents or the comparison between the two. The present study tested two variables - voice gender and agent embodiment, using conversational scripts. Twenty participants experienced autonomous driving using the simulator for four agent conditions and filled out subjective questionnaires for their perception of each agent. Results showed that the participants perceived the voice only female agent as more likeable, more comfortable, and more competent than other conditions. Their final preference ranking also favored this agent over the others. Interestingly, eye-tracking data showed that embodied agents did not add more visual distractions than the voice only agents. The results are discussed with the traditional gender stereotype, uncanny valley, and participants’ gender. This study can contribute to the design of in-vehicle agents in the autonomous vehicles and future studies are planned to further identify the underlying mechanisms of user perception on different agents.
- Investigating the effects of demographics and framing on the robot-theater programNadri, C.; Dong, J.; Swaim, H.; Ko, S.; Sanghavi, H.; Jeon, Myounghoon (SAGE Publications, 2020-01-01)While STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education programs have shown promise in increasing students’ interest in STEM and arts & design fields, the effects of demographic and other contextual factors have not been thoroughly investigated yet. While conducting robot-theater summer youth sessions with forty participants of the TechGirls international summer exchange program, we explored these factors. Participants in teams of four to six students created a script for a theater play that required the use of programmable robots. Results seem to suggest the influence of demographic factors such as nationality, as well as the effect of framing on participant attitudes towards robots and STEAM education. Subsequent validation of these effects in other studies is expected to contribute to refining the design of robot-theater and other STEAM education programs.

(American Physical Society, 2023-05-15)We measure the B0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using B0→D(∗)-π+ decays collected by the Belle II experiment in asymmetric-energy e+e- collisions produced by the SuperKEKB collider operating at the ϒ(4S) resonance. We fit the decay-time distribution of signal decays, where the initial flavor is determined by identifying the flavor of the other B meson in the event. The results, based on 33000 signal decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 190 fb-1, are τB0=(1.499±0.013±0.008) ps, Δmd=(0.516±0.008±0.005) ps-1, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world-average values.

H.; Choi, K.; Kim, J.; Yu, S.; Vajir, D.; Newbill, P.; Jeon, Myounghoon (ACM, 2022-01-01)The use of social robots has recently been investigated in various areas, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and artistic performances. To inform children of the seriousness of climate change and awareness that they can make change, we created the Robot Musical Theater performance. In this project, natural elements (wind, earth, fire, and water) were anthropomorphized and represented by humanoid robots (Pepper, Milo, and Nao). The robots were designed to motivate audience to participate in the action to prevent climate change. Because of COVID, only fourteen visitors as a single group were allowed to participate in real-time and posted to YouTube, where at the time of submission, 141 people have viewed the performance. The participants provided positive comments on the performance and showed their willingness to participate in the movement to prevent climate change, and expressed their further interest in STEM learning. This performance is expected to contribute to enhancing informal STEM and robotics learning, as well as advancing robotic arts.
