- Strasburg Streetscape Master PlanWatson, Kim; Gilboy, Elizabeth; Galloway, Jason; Lahy, Nathan (Virginia Tech. Community Design Assistance Center, 2006-06)The Town of Strasburg is nestled in the valley of the Shenandoah River, Massanutten Mountain, and the Allegheny foothills. The Town is the largest of the six communities in Shenandoah County and is located at the crossroads of U.S. Route 11 and State Route 55. The Town of Strasburg’s Beautification Committee enlisted the help of Community Design Assistance Center (CDAC) to prepare a plan for the revitalization of their main street (King Street) and to create a welcoming entry to the Town from Interstate 81. The components of this project include the creation of conceptual plans for an entryway into the Town from Interstate 81, a master tree plan for King Street, and a conceptual redesign of the Town lot behind the fire station, including a short streamside trail that connects downtown to the parking lot. These designs create a vision for Town that the community can build upon and use to renew the spirit of downtown Strasburg.
- Wong Park Design Remediation: Conceptual Master Plan and Plant ListWatson, Kim; Alvey, Alexis; Galloway, Jason; Osborn, Christina (Virginia Tech. Community Design Assistance Center, 2007-05)Wong Park is a 9 acre urban park located close to the heart of downtown Blacksburg, Virginia. The park has several features that make it a key component in the community, including the historic Bennett House and acres of open space. In the summer of 2005, two detention basins were installed in the park to help mitigate the flooding problems in adjacent neighborhoods. These detention basins were built much larger than initially anticipated in order to accommodate the runoff for a 100-year flood. The CDAC team worked with town staff members to develop design alternatives for the detention ponds and the areas directly adjacent to the ponds.
