- A pilot plant study of the anaerobic digestion of semi-chemical mill wastesHild, Joseph Charles (Virginia Tech, 1951-05-05)The purpose of this investigation was to determine if high loadings of semi-chemical pulp mill waste could be processed in a pilot plant by anaerobic digestion.
- A study of the sands of VirginiaHartman, W. T.; McGauhey, Percy Harold (Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, 1929)It is the purpose of this paper to give the results of the study and investigation of the sand deposits in various parts of the State of Virginia. The chief stress is laid on those sands coming from points west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The reasons for stressing the western and southwestern Virginia sands, as they will be called throughout this paper, will be brought out in the pages that follow. The study and investigation of these sands was started in the spring of 1928 and has been carried on continually up to the present time, May 1929. At the present time practically all of the building sand used in the State of Virginia comes from a sand deposit at Petersburg, Virginia. (By building sand it is to be understood that we mean sand used in concrete building construction). During this investigation of different sands, it has been found hard to produce a sand that will absolutely satisfy A. S. T. M. (American Society for Testing Materials) specifications. Results of this work point to the possibility that these specifications might have certain limitations put on them which would allow the use of sand other than that from Petersburg. The chief aim in finding a sand to replace that coming from Petersburg is due to the high freight rates which make the cost of this sand laid down on the job in this part of the State (southwest Virginia) practically four times the cost at the pits in Petersburg.
- A study of the stream pollution problem in the Roanoke, Virginia, metropolitan districtEich, Henry F.; McGauhey, Percy Harold; Jackson, Herbert William; Henderson, Croswell (Virginia Tech, 1942-06-05)A field investigation of the pollution existing in the Roanoke River within the Roanoke Metropolitan district was carried out from June, 1940 to May, 1941 by various departments of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute with the material aid of several other interested groups. Studies of the chemical and bacteriological conditions, and of the microscopic life existing in the stream were made by P. H. McGauhey and H. F. Eich, of the Department of Civil Engineering. The invertebrate and vertebrate life of the stream, as well as the toxicity of viscose wastes to fishes, was investigated by H. W. Jackson and Croswell Henderson, of the Department of Biology. Monthly mineral analyses of water were made by F. H. Fish and others of the Department of Chemistry, and data relative to certain industrial wastes were furnished by R. A. Fisher and Dudley Thompson, of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
