- Community College Estimated Growth: Fall 2010Phillippe, Kent; Mullin, Christopher M. (American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), 2011-02-01)This report summarizes findings of a survey from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The report provides enrollment data from 2000–2010. As the report shows, although enrollment has continued to increase, the rate of increase has slowed in comparison to previous years.
- Moving Success From the Shadows: Data Systems That Link Education and Workforce OutcomesMullin, Christopher M.; Lebesch, Anna (American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), 2010-03-01)The need for better data on the performance of higher education has become a major focus of education policymakers, and this has been reflected in federal legislation. Community colleges are appropriately held accountable for the workforce outcomes of their students, but the data that are gathered to evaluate those outcomes must reflect the post-college occupational experiences of their students: child-care providers, engineers, nurses, general contractors, and members of the armed forces. To better understand the current state of linkages between education and workforce outcomes, in this report, the authors examine the following issues: 1. The assumptions federal legislation makes about linkages between education and workforce outcomes; 2. The data needed to document those outcomes; and 3. How well current data collection systems capture the workforce outcomes of educational pursuits.
- Postcollege Workforce Outcomes Measures: Issues Facing Policymakers, Analysts, and ResearchersMullin, Christopher M. (American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), 2013-07-01)The impact of college on workforce outcomes has become a central issue in the ongoing debate about the role of postsecondary education in the American economy and society. Community colleges are at the center of this debate. The report provides a foundation on which future conversations may be based. It also outlines some of the policy considerations that interested parties need to analyze when examining workforce data about former students. Clearly, higher education is about more than earnings or economics. But, just as clearly, workforce outcomes are essential aspects of postsecondary education.
- The Road Ahead: A Look at Trends in the Educational Attainment of Community College StudentsMullin, Christopher M. (American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), 2011-10-01)The report analyses data on educational attainment at community colleges. One extremely positive conclusion can be reached: Educational attainment for all key populations is increasing at community colleges. The investments made in a community college education, by individuals and by society as a whole, are paying off. Moreover, over the past twenty years, the percent increase in credentials awarded has been double the percent increase in enrollment. These findings are even more pronounced for students of color. Consistent with other research, actual rates of transfer for students are much higher than commonly reported as well.
- When Less is More: Prioritizing Open AccessMullin, Christopher M. (American Association of Community Colleges, 2017-10-25)When Less is More: Prioritizing Open Access looks at the mythical full-time equivalent student. Too often, the college community equates all students with full-time equivalents (FTE). This occurs even when it is well known that, unlike other sectors of education, the majority of community college students simply do not enroll full time. Quantifying support based on FTE may be damaging to community colleges in terms of funding and the support services needed for all students.
