- 2019 Virginia State University College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Impact Statement ReportNartea, Theresa J. - Agritourism Safety in VirginiaPreisser, Afton (Virginia Tech, 2017-11-17)Safety is a concern for agritourism venues because an operating farm may expose visitors to many unfamiliar conditions, situations, and/or animals, which opens the farm operation to potential liability risks during these interactions. The purpose of this research was to review current safety protocols on Virginia agritourism operations and seek information that was needed to improve for the future. Based on a survey sent to Virginia operators, numerous areas were identified which would benefit from further education and risk management information. Insurance offerings tailored to agritourism operations are needed, in addition to improved employee screening and training for operations management. The survey found that 25.24% of responses do not do any type of pre-employment screening while over 7% do not participate in walkthroughs before events. The purpose of this research was to document specific protocols already in place, identify, and describe critical areas of improvement for Virginia agritourism event, venue, and visitor safety practices.

- COVID-19 Stress Reduction Technique: The Japanese Practice of Shinrin-yoku or Forest BathingNartea, Theresa J.; Koci, Joel (Virginia Cooperative Extension, 2020-12-07)Measures to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, such as social distancing, force individuals to spend more time indoors, removed from the natural environment. Social isolation coupled with the lack of outdoor exposure to nature may have a negative impact on an individual's ability to cope with stress (Burtscher et al.), 2020). Ongoing research indicates stress may reduce an individual's immunity to disease (Seiler et al., 2020). The purpose of this extension bulletin is to explain the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, also referred to as "forest bathing," to individuals interested in an academically researched and low-cost, natural stress reduction technique that may have positive health outcomes for individuals dealing with COVID-19 related stress factors. This educational bulletin may be of interest to extension personnel working with clientele in the programming areas of natural resources, family and consumer sciences and 4-H.

The purpose of this series of publications is to inform Virginia agribusiness owners and managers about the farm financial risk management tools, techniques, and resources available to help them prepare and use a financial systems approach for their operations. This publication introduces the four financial statements that farm managers can use to record and assess historical farm financial performance. The topics covered in this resource are not all-inclusive, but after reading this publication, beginning farmers should be prepared to move forward in planning for their farms. The accompanying parts in the series are “Farm Financial Risk Management Series Part I: Overview of Financial Statements for New and Beginning Farmers” (Virginia Cooperative Extension publication AAEC-114P), and “Farm Financial Risk Management Series Part III: Introduction to Farm Planning Budgets” (VCE publication AAEC-116P).
