University Relations, 2003-12-10)Nadia Boschi of Washington, D.C., assistant professor of building construction in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, has been elected to a three-year term as president of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). She took office at the 7th International"Healthy Buildings" conference held in Singapore in December. She is the youngest person, and first architect, to hold this position.

University Relations, 2003-04-03)The public is invited to attend a free lecture featuring Alexander Garvin, Vice President for Planning, Design and Development for the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. The event will be held in the Shaftman Performance Hall of the Jefferson Center in Roanoke on Saturday April 5, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. Garvin has been coordinating the formulation of comprehensive development plans for the World Trade Center site and the surrounding areas of Lower Manhattan, seeking input from the various individuals and organizations that have an interest in the process. The event is sponsored by the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Downtown Roanoke Incorporated, and Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies and Department of Architecture.

University Relations, 2004-02-10)Ron Kagawa of Arlington, Va., associate professor of landscape architecture at Virginia Tech, has co-written a book titled "Cobb's Island, Virginia: The Last Sentinal." The book offers a glimpse of the place that was and remains the 1,300 acre, four-mile-long Cobb's Island, one of Virginia's barrier islands owned and protected by the Nature Conservancy's Virginia Coast Reserve.

The "Motorcyclist's Guide to Lost Communities" features two 3-4 hour tour routes, and offers suggestions for stops at points of interest along the way.

- Research Exhibit Wins Editor's Choice Award At International Contemporary Furniture Fair In NYCNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2003-06-10)A team of Virginia Tech students won the "Editor's Choice" award at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City May 17-20, 2003. The yearly furniture fest is this country's premier event for contemporary design. Virginia Tech, one of only four schools selected to participate, exhibited alongside hundreds of companies showing the best and hippest home and office products from 22 countries. During the four exhibit days, the convention center attracted more than 17,000 interior designers, architects, retailers, facility managers, wholesalers, store design professionals, hotel and restaurant designers, manufacturers, students, and members of the general public.

- Solar House Tour Scheduled For Earth DayNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2003-04-14)Virginia Tech's solar house will be open to the public on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, 2003, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the university's Research and Demonstration Facility off Plantation Road in Blacksburg. The 530 sq. ft. house was designed last year by students and faculty in the College of Architecture & Urban Studies and the College of Engineering to compete in the national Solar Decathlon sponsored by the Department of Energy. The competition was held last fall in Washington, D.C., where teams from around the country converged for two weeks on the Mall to see who could best design, build, and operate the most effective and attractive house powered solely by the sun. The house placed 5th overall, and took first place in two of the 10 categories.
- Virginia Tech Architecture and Interior Design Programs Move Up in 2004 National RankingsNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2003-12-16)For the 5th year, "DesignIntelligence" and the "Almanac of Architecture and Design" asked the leaders of the country's best design firms to rank which colleges and universities have the most outstanding programs. For 2004, the Virginia Tech architecture undergraduate program ranked 4th in the nation, up from14 th in 2003, and the interior design program ranked 8th, up from 10th place, in 2003. The annual rankings are compiled in conjunction with Counsel House Research.
- Virginia Tech Board Of Visitors Approves Name Of Future Building Construction HomeNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2003-03-10)"Bishop-Favrao Hall" will be the official name of the newest addition to the College of Architecture & Urban Studies, approved by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors at its meeting today. Bishop-Favrao Hall will be the future home of the Building Construction department, named after Richard Bishop, 1967 graduate of the building construction program and key alumni donor for the building, and William Favrao, founder of the university's construction program in the mid-40s.

University Relations, 2004-02-14)Scott Poole of Blacksburg, Va., professor of architecture in the College of Architecture & Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, has been named director of the college's new School of Architecture + Design. The foundation, professional, and graduate architecture programs,as well as industrial and interior design, comprise the five academic areas in the school.
- Virginia Tech Professor Receives Award from Non-profit Research GroupNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2003-11-06)Alnoor Ebrahim, assistant professor of urban affairs and planning at Virginia Tech's Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center in Alexandria, Va., will be awarded the 2003 "Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly" Article Award from the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action at their annual conference in Colorado on Nov. 21. He was one of two recipients of this award and wins a $500 cash prize for his article, "Information Struggles: The Role of Information in the Reproduction of Non-Governmental Organization-Funder Relationships" published in 2002.
- Virginia Tech students win 22 gold and 12 silver citations at the regional ADDY•À_ AwardsNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2004-03-18)Nineteen Virginia Tech graphic design/art students received winning citations at the Western Virginia ADDY(R) Awards program sponsored by the Advertising Federation of the Roanoke Valley held in Roanoke in March.
- Virginia's "Lost Communities" photographic exhibit to be one of the first guest exhibits at new O. Winston Link MuseumNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2004-01-07)A photographic exhibit of Virginia's "lost communities" will be displayed at the newly opened O. Winston Link Museum through February. Faculty and students at Virginia Tech's Community Design Assistance Center (CDAC) in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies have been working on this project since 2000, traveling across the state to study, research, and compile information on once thriving coal, lumber, or fishing communities that are now mere remnants of structures, or are existing small downtown areas less prosperous than they once were. The project findings will culminate in a photographic history book available to those interested in traveling, exploring, studying, designing, and living in the commonwealth.
- VT Professor Wins National Public Administration Award -- This marks the 2nd year in a row the award has been given to a Virginia Tech professorNewbill, Sarah (Virginia Tech. University Relations, 2003-02-07)Charles Goodsell, professor emeritus in the Center for Public Administration & Policy (CPAP), will be awarded the American Society for Public Administration's Dwight Waldo Award for 2003 at the society's 64th national conference in Washington, D.C. in March. Goodsell will receive this distinction for outstanding lifetime contributions to the literature of public administration. He will also be featured in a future issue of ASPA's "Public Administration Review".
