- Legacy Planning - A Guide For Virginia LandownersGagnon, Jennifer L.; Downing, Adam K.; Santucci, Mike; Mountain, Travis (Virginia Cooperative Extension, 2021-01-11)Most woodland owners want their land to stay intact, in forest, and in family, even after they pass. Unfortunately, land is most vulnerable to subdivision, land use change, and being sold out of the family when it passes from one generation to the next. This is often a result of poor (or no) planning. Fortunately, with proper planning and communication, these unwanted changes can be avoided. This guide leads families through a 9-step process to help ensure everyone's wishes for the land are met.

- What's NEXT… for Your Land?Santucci, Mike; Downing, Adam K. (Virginia Forestry Association, 2017-11)Forest landowners are practiced in thinking long-range for timber management and harvesting. Nurturing a timber crop and a healthy forest is, by nature, a long-term commitment. Even so, there is a longer term aspect to owning woodland that is arguably more important. It’s the question only you, a woodland owner, can answer: What’s next for your land?
- Woodland Owner Legacy Planning Benefits and BarriersDowning, Adam K.; Santucci, Mike; Jones, Jennifer E.; Dennings, Kelley; Large, Lori; Phelps, Kaitlin (2018-10-30)The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) and Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) both seek to assist woodland owners in Virginia to pass their land forward to the next generation intact and in forest. Southside Virginia was selected as the study area because it contains large unfragmented family forest ownerships, contains a large proportion of high forest conservation value forestland, and a higher proportion of underserved populations relative to other parts of the Commonwealth. This Benefits and Barriers Analysis was undertaken to identify the barriers to, and benefits from, intergenerational land transfer planning as perceived by family forest owners.
