- Makuleke tourism initiativeSouth African National Parks (2007-06-26)As part of the South African land reform program, negotiations with the SANP for the restitution of the Makuleke region to the Makuleke community started in the mid 1990's. The Makuleke land claim was settled in late 1998, in which the Makuleke people regained formal title to 24,000 ha of land in the northern part of the KNP. The land was de-proclaimed, and subsequently re-proclaimed as a Contractual Park in 1999. In exchange for full ownership, the Makuleke agreed to let the land remain part of the KNP, under joint SANP/Makuleke management control for a period of 50 years. In addition, the Makuleke community committed themselves to maintain the land for conservation use, and not use the land for either residential or agricultural purposes.
- Richtersveld National ParkSouth African National Parks (2007-06-20)In 1975, the South African National Parks (SANP) adopted the resolution that negotiations be started over obtaining the land for Richtersveld National Park. In planning, it was agreed that farmers would be able to continue grazing their animals within the park, but those willing to voluntarily reduce their herds would be given compensatory land based upon the amount of stock reduction. Additionally, the SANP will pay an amount of 50c per hectare, i.e. approximately R80 000 per year to the Richtersveld Community Trust annually. The Management Plan Committee can amend the nature and amount compensated after the first five years. The SANP will establish a succulent nursery and the net profit will be paid to the Community Trust. Residents of the northern Richtersveld will get preference as employees of the park.
