- Contested Agronomy: Agricultural Research in a Changing World(New York, NY: Routledge, 2012)Challenges to food security have renewed interest in agricultural research, in which agronomy is a core element. The editors of this book seek to contextualize the production, validation, communication and use of agronomic knowledge through a political analysis of agronomic research which they label political agronomy. In doing so, they aim to understand the incentives, prioritizations, and perspectives of agronomic research as it faces contestation in peer-reviewed journals, in public critique from organizations, and in national and subnational committees. Chapters provide case studies which portray the value of a political agronomy perspective in the analysis of agricultural development, highlighting issues such as conservation agriculture, rice intensification, and biofortification.

- Multicultural Teaching Competence as Perceived by Elementary School teachersGorham, Ephraim (Virginia Tech, 2001-11-16)The purpose of this study was to (a) explore elementary school teachers' perceptions of their strengths and deficiencies for working with, and meeting the need of, students from diverse cultural backgrounds; and (b) assess the relationships between these perceptions and the teachers multicultural background and demographic factors such as age, gender, and ethnicity. The participants were elementary school teachers in the Guilford County School System, North Carolina. One school was randomly selected from the four geographical regions in the school system. Teachers who taught summer school were also selected to participate in the program. Classroom teachers from selected schools participated in the study. This study used Jacobeth Ntsebe Thabede's dissertation, Multicultural Teaching Competence as Perceived by Business Education Student Teachers (1996) as a model to frame the research. Thabede used Wayson's (1993) The Multicultural Teaching Scale classified into Banks' (1993) Dimensions of Multicultural Education to determine the level of multicultural teaching skills of business education student teachers. This study determined the level of multicultural teaching skills of elementary school teachers. The outcome of the regression formula indicated 38 percent of the variance of Building Respect was explained. Building respect for diversity represents the teachers' reported willingness to model respect building practices. The four important independent variables were age, the number of hours of multicultural instruction, whether they taught in a suburban school, and whether the participants had experiences with diversity during their education. The more multicultural background during teacher education, the older the participant, the more hours of multicultural instruction, and if teachers were working in a suburban teaching environment, the more likely teachers were to report behaviors that reflect building respect for multicultural diversity. The findings of the focus groups and the survey showed teachers, who had multi-ethnic family origin, early education experience with cultural diverse students and multicultural friendship groups, perceived themselves competent to teach multicultural students.
- New VCE Onboarding - Professional Development SurveyVines, Karen A.; Johnson, Lonnie; Bishop, Hannah; Paulette, Morgan; Pearson, Jocelyn; Spencer, Janet; Thompson, John (Virginia Cooperative Extension Publications, 2022-11-08)This survey was developed in 2021 to provide insight into onboarding and professional development needs for Virginia Cooperative Extension. The survey was used as a census survey across the various roles and program areas represented in the VCE organization. The survey collects data associated with time in VCE and other Extension organizations, as well as self-perceived data of the Extension professional related to their career stage (Rennekamp & Nall, 1994). While the purpose was determining onboarding needs, the survey also provides insight into training needs across career stages as well as training preferences. Data collected for VCE using this survey is available at https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/content/dam/pubs_ext_vt_edu/ALCE/alce-278/ALCE-278.pdf.
- Virginia Cooperative Extension Onboarding 2021 Survey FindingsVines, Karen A.; Johnson, Lonnie; Bishop, Hannah; Paulette, Morgan; Pearson, Jocelyn; Spencer, Janet; Thompson, John (Virginia Cooperative Extension, 2021-10-26)Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) gathered input in 2020 to develop an Organizational Effectiveness Plan (VCE, 2021). Item 2.5.2 is to “develop on-boarding and training programs using appropriate pedagogy, to ensure new employees understand their job expectations and are supported through their transition to their new careers (VCE, 2021, p. 3).” As part of this process two committees were developed within VCE and one of the preliminary activities was to conduct a census survey of the organization. This report contains the findings from that survey and is intended to serve as a resource in the development of on-boarding and training programs in VCE.
