- CIMMYT's strategy for catalyzing the adoption of conservation agriculture in southern AfricaNeely, Constance L.; Dixon, John; Wall, P. (CIMMYT (International Wheat and Maize Improvement Center), 2008)"Conservation Agriculture (CA) is a term that has been coined in the last 10 years to describe agricultural systems that include three major components: minimal soil movement, permanent cover of the soil surface generally with crops and crop residues, and crop rotation. ... There were several conceptual pillars upon which the project was built apart from the three basic principles of CA. These concepts, a result of CIMMYTs close involvement with CA work in South Asia and Latin America, included the following:
- Conservation agriculture, improving soil quality for sustainable production systems?Verhulst, N.; Govaerts, Bram; Verachtert, E.; Castellanos-Navarrete, A.; Mezzalama, M.; Wall, P.; Chocobar, A.; Deckers, Jozef; Sayre, Ken D. (Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press, 2010)This chapter presents a detailed definition of conservation agriculture and its influence on soil quality. In a time when food security is becoming an increasingly important issue, the manner in which farmers manage their crops can have huge implications for crop productivity. Where conventional farming practices have always been used, it is evident that soil health is declining. Being aware of the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of soil quality can help researchers and developers maintain and improve soil quality and increase crop production.
- Enhancing adoption of CA in Southern Africa: Initial experiences and lessonsMekuria, M.; Wall, P. (2008)This presentation gives background information on the setting in Southern Africa and describes the participatory, dynamic, and iterative approaches used to enhance adoption of conservation agriculture (CA). The authors present initial findings and discuss potential constraints to adoption, concluding with a look ahead to goals for 2015.
