- Disparities in Tuition: A Study of Tuitions Assessed by Hispanic Serving Community Colleges Versus Non-Hispanic Serving Community Colleges in TexasWaller, Lee; Glover, Louis; Simpson, Lynn (Academic Leadership Journal, 2009-10-01)With the shift of higher education funding from the federal and state levels to the local level, community colleges’ choices to offset this funding deficit become few and difficult. One regrettable choice that is frequently made is to increase tuition. This choice has the largest financial impact on low-income students who come from minority backgrounds. This paper shows some findings from a a study of tuitions by Hispanic Serving Community Colleges versus Non-Hispanic Serving Community Colleges in Texas.
- Equal Access: A National Comparison of Federal Grants-in-Aid Awarded at Public and Private Four Year Degree Granting InstitutionsWaller, Lee; Weeks, Sandra; Westbrook, Steven; Payton, Karl (Academic Leadership Journal, 2009-10-01)More than twelve million undergraduate students in the United States benefit from some form of financial aid. The large percentage of students accessing financial aid indicates that affordability is a pressing problem for many current and potential college students and their families. As college costs continue to rise, the availability of financial assistance becomes increasingly important, especially to students from low-income families. In this context, the authors carry out a comparison of federal grants-in-aid awarded at public and private four year degree granting institutions.
