- Maximizing Student Success: A Student-Driven Platform for Higher Education AccountabilityYoung Invincibles (Young Invincibles, 2018-06-01)Despite students’ personal stake in higher education, with significant amounts of time and money invested, policymakers have yet to incorporate students’ perspectives on policies that measure and respond to higher education outcomes, generally referred to as accountability policy. To fill this void, Young Invincibles set out to increase our understanding of what students think about accountability policy and provide policymakers with important insight when developing future proposals. We heard from a diverse group of highly engaged students across the country about their aspirations for college, who they consider responsible for success or failure, and how to design federal and state policy to ensure students are protected, institutions receiving public dollars are held accountable for their outcomes, and the larger goals of equity and mobility are advanced.
- New Research from Young Invincibles Shows Importance of Online Search In College Search Process for Working Adults and First-Generation StudentsYoung Invincibles (Young Invincibles, 2018-11-01)In an effort to better understand the college search process for today’s students, Young Invincibles used a mixed methods approach to learn about students’ search experience and the information they seek. It was conducted an online poll of nearly 300 working 22-44 year olds who were considering higher education, as well as those currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program. It came as no surprise that the vast majority (72 percent) of respondents used an online search engine, predominantly Google (88 percent), to learn more about colleges. It was also conducted six focus groups with nearly 40 students ages 17 to 36 years old, including first-generation students, working-adult students, and students earning their GED who are considering postsecondary education. This report presents the findings.
- Race and Ethnicity as a Barrier to Opportunity: A Blueprint for Higher Education EquityYoung Invincibles (Young Invincibles, 2017-02-01)The United States is in the midst of one of the most significant demographic shifts in the history of the country. Already, America’s young adults are the largest and most diverse generation ever. Among the 75 million Millennials, about 40 percent are people of color—African Americans, Latinx individuals, Native Americans, and Asian & Pacific Islanders—significant growth from the previous generation. The country is on track to be a majority-minority nation in just three decades. This report explores racial and ethnic disparities in higher education and proposes a package of equity-focused federal policy solutions that can help close gaps moving forward. The report identifies a set of measures—informed by a series of conversations with young people across the country—of higher education equity with the goal of highlighting gaps between racial and ethnic groups along three categories: college access and affordability, attainment and success, and repayment and post-collegiate outcomes.
