- Advances in Behavioral Remote Data Collection in the Home Setting: Assessing the Mother-Infant Relationship and Infant's Adaptive Behavior via Virtual VisitsShin, Eunkyung; Smith, Cynthia L.; Howell, Brittany R. (Frontiers, 2021-10-01)Psychological science is struggling with moving forward in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially due to the halting of behavioral data collection in the laboratory. Safety barriers to assessing psychological behavior in person increased the need for remote data collection in natural settings. In response to these challenges, researchers, including our team, have utilized this time to advance remote behavioral methodology. In this article, we provide an overview of our group’s strategies for remote data collection methodology and examples from our research in collecting behavioral data in the context of psychological functioning. Then, we describe the design and development of our strategies for remote data collection of mother-infant interactions, with the goal being to assess maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness, as well as infants’ adaptive behaviors in several developmental domains. During these virtual visits over Zoom, mother-infant dyads watched a book-reading video and were asked to participate in peek-a-boo, toy play, and toy removal tasks. After the behavioral tasks, a semi-structured interview (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale – VABS III) was conducted to assess the infant’s adaptive behavior in communication, socialization, daily living skills, and motor domains. We delineate the specific strategies we applied to integrate laboratory tasks and a semi-structured interview into remote data collection in home settings with mothers and infants. We also elaborate on issues encountered during remote data collection and how we resolved these challenges. Lastly, to inform protocols for future remote data collection, we address considerations and recommendations, as well as benefits and future directions for behavioral researchers in developmental psychology research.
- Dosing parameters for the effects of high-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation on smoking cessation: Study protocol for a randomized factorial sham-controlled clinical trialCarl, Ellen; Liskiewicz, Amylynn; Rivard, Cheryl; Alberico, Ronald; Belal, Ahmed; Mahoney, Martin C.; Quisenberry, Amanda J.; Bickel, Warren K.; Sheffer, Christine E. (Springer, 2020-05-01)Background: Despite the considerable success of comprehensive tobacco control efforts, tobacco use remains one of the greatest preventable causes of death and disease today. Over half of all smokers in the US make quit attempts every year, but over 90% relapse within 12 months, choosing the immediate reinforcement of smoking over the long-term benefits of quitting. Conceptual and empirical evidence supports continued investigation of high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in reducing relapse and decreasing cigarette consumption. While this evidence is compelling, an optimal dosing strategy must be determined before a long-term efficacy trial can be conducted. The goal of this study is to determine a dosing strategy for 20 Hz rTMS that will produce the best long-term abstinence outcomes with the fewest undesirable effects. Methods: This is a fully crossed, double-blinded, sham-controlled, 3x2x2 randomized factorial study. The three factors are duration (stimulation days: 8, 12, and 16); intensity (900 or 1800 pulses per day); and sham control. Participants (n = 258) will consist of adults (18-65) who are motivated to quit smoking cigarettes and who will be followed for 6 months post-quit. Outcomes include latency to relapse, point prevalence abstinence rates, delay discounting rates, cognitive-behavioral skills acquisition, and multiple measures of potential undesirable effects that impact participant compliance. Discussion: This study integrates existing theoretical concepts and methodologies from neuropsychology, behavioral economics, brain stimulation, clinical psychology, and the evidence-based treatment of tobacco dependence in the development of a promising and innovative approach to treat tobacco dependence. This study will establish an optimal dosing regimen for efficacy testing. Findings are expected to have a significant influence on advancing this approach as well as informing future research on clinical approaches that combine rTMS with other evidence-based treatments for tobacco dependence and perhaps other addictions.
- The Latent Structure of Interpersonal Problems: Validity of Dimensional, Categorical, and Hybrid ModelsWendt, Leon P.; Wright, Aidan G. Read; Benecke, Cord; Krieger, Tobias; Zimmermann, Johannes (American Psychological Association, 2019-11-01)Interpersonal problems are key transdiagnostic constructs in psychopathology. In the past, investigators have neglected the importance of operationalizing interpersonal problems according to their latent structure by using divergent representations of the construct: (a) computing scores for severity, agency, and communion ("dimensional approach"), (b) classifying persons into subgroups with respect to their interpersonal profile ("categorical approach"). This hinders cumulative research on interpersonal problems, because findings cannot be integrated both from a conceptual and a statistical point of view. We provide a comprehensive evaluation of interpersonal problems by enlisting several large samples (Ns = 5,400, 491, 656, and 712) to estimate a set of latent variable candidate models, covering the spectrum of purely dimensional (i.e., confirmatory factor analysis using Gaussian and nonnormal latent t-distributions), hybrid (i.e., semiparametric factor analysis), and purely categorical approaches (latent class analysis). Statistical models were compared with regard to their structural validity, as evaluated by model fit (corrected Akaike's information criterion and the Bayesian information criterion), and their concurrent validity, as defined by the models' ability to predict relevant external variables. Across samples, the fully dimensional model performed best in terms of model fit, prediction, robustness, and parsimony. We found scant evidence that categorical and hybrid models provide incremental value for understanding interpersonal problems. Our results indicate that the latent structure of interpersonal problems is best represented by continuous dimensions, especially when one allows for nonnormal latent distributions. - The phenotype of recovery IV: Delay discounting predicts perceived stress and a chance locus of control in individuals in recovery from substance use disordersTomlinson, Devin C.; Tegge, Allison N.; Athamneh, Liqa N.; Bickel, Warren K. (Elsevier, 2020-12-01)Objective: Understanding individuals who are successful in recovery from substance use disorders will help to inform treatments and preventative measures. Stress has been shown to be associated with both substance use and relapse. Delay discounting is associated with risk of substance use; it is predictive of treatment outcomes and maintained abstinence. Associations between perceived stress, beliefs about locus of control, and delay discounting have yet to be assessed in individuals in recovery from substance use disorder. Methods: Data from 93 individuals in recovery from substance use recruited from the International Quit and Recovery Registry (IQRR) were analyzed. Individuals completed the adjusting amount delay discounting procedure to obtain delay discounting rates. Level of perceived stress was assessed by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). An individual's belief about locus of control was assessed using the Internality, Powerful Others and Chance Scale (IPCS). Results: Delay discounting was a significant predictor of perceived stress and scores associated with beliefs about a Chance locus of control (i.e., belief that events that occur in an individual's life are because of chance or luck), even after controlling for demographic characteristics. Time in recovery was also predictive of levels of perceived stress; this relationship was mediated by delay discounting. Conclusion: The present study indicates that delay discounting can predict perception of stress and beliefs about a chance locus of control in individuals in recovery. This information may help understand, identify, and assist individuals whomay need different, new, or more intensive interventions for their substance use disorder.
