    Abstract
The severity of the latest natural disasters and the increased probability of other major disruptions due to climate change mandate further examination of the consequences of such events on human society. Current unsustainable practices are making these types of devastating events more plausible. If not quickly addressed, these failures will destabilize both human society and the biospheric life support system.
