The Piracicaba River Watershed case

Abstract

This program is being carried out by the Piracicaba-Jundiaí Consortium and is resulting in 1% of the water revenues from various municipalities in the Piracicaba River Basin are being used to contribute to the restoration and conservation of the forests. They are currently collecting approximately US$ 500,000/year, with the potential to double that revenue if additional municipalities would adopt the 1% policy. The majority of the funds are being used for direct reforestation costs, with the possibility of compensating farmers for opportunity costs lost on the reforested lands being researched.
