Developing sustainable conservation agriculture systems for smallholders in Southern Africa: Lesotho & Mozambique
Abstract
This presentation presents the research proposal for developing conservation agriculture (CA) systems in southern Africa (LTRA-9). In the two countries of Lesotho and Mozambique, food security is an increasingly pertinent issue and the response from farmers is to plow more land. This has led to decreased soil organic matter, decreased soil fertility, and erosion. Through the collaboration of researchers and community members, no-till techniques will be tested with the goal of increasing incomes, food security, and gender equity for small-scale farmers in this South African region.
