Abstract

Discusses the invasive insect pest the Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) and its damage to native ash trees (Fraxinus spp.). Describes this pest's physical characteristics, and life cycle. Discusses methods of control, which currently are limited to use of a systemic insecticide applied in the soil at the base of the ash tree, and removal of dead trees. Recently some species of parasitoid wasps have introduced into the region as a means of biological control. By 2016 the Emerald Ash Borer has been found in 25 Virginia counties.
