There are two "markets for ecosystem services" pilot studies in the Goulburn Broken Catchment of Victoria, Australia. The first, "Development Offsets", aims to develop a scheme of defined "offsets" to compensate for specific ecosystem impacts of rural development. The second, "Treading Salty Water or Trading Salt & Water", addresses the costs of dryland salinity with a proposed mechanism for tradeable property rights. The objective is to incorporate the broader scale impacts of salinity into individual landholder decision making.en
