The method of multiple scales is used to analyze parametrically excited, linear systems having many degrees of freedom and distinct natural frequencies. Explicit second-order expressions are obtained for the characteristic exponents which yield the transition curves. Various combination resonances are treated. The results are applied to the buckling of free-clamped columns under the influence of sinusoidally varying axial loads.en
