Abstract

This paper presents a case study from the Philippines to describe the challenges of conflicting environmental concerns and economic forces in the uplands of Southeast Asia. The authors describe the policy and institutional changes that accompanied the transition from traditional subsistence agriculture with long forested fallow periods to rapid forest exploitation and expansion of commercial agriculture in the upland regions of the Philippines.
