| dc.description.abstract | In 1975, the South African National Parks (SANP) adopted the resolution that negotiations be started over obtaining the land for Richtersveld National Park. In planning, it was agreed that farmers would be able to continue grazing their animals within the park, but those willing to voluntarily reduce their herds would be given compensatory land based upon the amount of stock reduction. Additionally, the SANP will pay an amount of 50c per hectare, i.e. approximately R80 000 per year to the Richtersveld Community Trust annually. The Management Plan Committee can amend the nature and amount compensated after the first five years. The SANP will establish a succulent nursery and the net profit will be paid to the Community Trust. Residents of the northern Richtersveld will get preference as employees of the park. | en |
